Description
For miles around Havre-St-Pierre, the lifeline of the region, route 138, crosses a land of bogs and tundra. The road reached Havre St-Pierre in 1976. As locally extracted titanium was used on Apollo missions, locals joke that Havre St-Pierre went to the moon and then, they got a road connection with the rest of Quebec. Route 138 is progressively extended, now reaching 200 km east of Havre St-Pierre. However, to many remote communities, the weekly ship is the only connection in the summer. In winter, snowmobiles make the region more accessible.
